:oh Well; we sailed from Port Sweetenham to Kuching [The very ugly Capital of Sarawak, on some old tub , that had apparently been torpedoed and sank ; during WW2;[ in fact a few of our guys reckoned it had been to "the bottom , more than once" there were over 700 of us and it was terrible, The toilets were a trench running along each side and running water was pumped along the trench. We slung hammocks below deck and found some funny person had worked out a way to make Infantry jump; He would get a pile of paper ; set fire to it and [when all the little doors to the cubicles were closed ; toss the paper into the water . As this passed under our rear end ; the doors of the cubicles would burst open and some [VERY] bad language was uttered by the guys who had their backsides singed. There was plenty of beer on board this floating junk pile [free] so we put up with the goings on and the dreadful food. We arrive in Kuching, then told we had to stay on board for the night. A full Battalion of British Royal Marines got on as well.... Ah well; there was PLENTY of beer; so it was ok. The city of Kuching smelled [very badly] and we were sure glad to get off that floating wreck.; onto some trucks which took us to Bau; which was to become our base

Just a country boy from Bathurst N.S.W. Bathurst was the first major town established after the mountain range [ known as the great dividing range was crossed]; It is now a CITY.
