In Australia; we call 'em mobile phones. Today; I visited a shopping mall ; about the size of a small suburb. [my mission, ? to get a mobile phone] . There must be dozens of retail shops , all selling these phones. Did I get one ? NO. in EVERY 1 of them; I was asked for my drivers licence or a passport; to prove who I am. Upon being told that I did NOT have a licence; the guys all looked at me as if I was wearing 2 heads on my shoulders and all of them blurted out "Why?" The answer is simple,[ I am an Epileptic and in the state of N.S.W. it is an offence to be caught behind the wheel of a motor vehicle ;  in my state of health].. So; the next question".passport?" my answer is "no; I am not intending to fly out of the country, right now". Why ,all this stupid Bull****?[ regulations is why]. Dearie me ,I did not have to have a licence or a passport to enlist in our Army and fight in 2 wars .BUT . I gotta have one to buy a simple mobile phone!!. The only reason I even want one is if I have a seizure in my scooter and need to call for help; I would be able to get help; rather than rely on some passing good samaritan to help me.My recent experiences with good samaritans showed me that there are NOT to many of those  around. Do I open the door of the scooter and scream "HELP"?. I do NOT think so. Fall to the ground and thrash about as Epileptics do? Some people may slow down to get a better look; that's about it.; but help a battered old soldier? HARDLY.My battery powered scooter does not require a licence and is simply an aid for a physically disabled person...... ME. my very first seizure was a classic Grand Mal . I was overcome by an "aura" that something very bad was about to occur; I fell; face first and thrashed around; tearing off pieces of skin, broke my right hip, 7 ribs and smashed the front of my skull,. I was a hopeless mess ; but some passers by gave me aid and called for an ambulance. In a hospital; a very confused and painfull Lex came to be conscious and to be told that I must be very careful as I moved around as this "thing " could occur at any time and also that "it" could kill me.

Just a country boy from Bathurst N.S.W. Bathurst was the first major town established after the mountain range [ known as the great dividing range was crossed]; It is now a CITY.
