each evening; just before "stand to" a commander would call a d'f which is a Defensive Fire; usually about 500 metres out ; depending on what type of country we were in. If on the edge of paddy; the distances may shorten, especially if there was a lot of "sign"of enemy in the area. If our night "harbour position was hit; the commander would walk the rounds in ; or in dire circumstances; evacate the position and drop 2 guns 3 rounds each on our position. It was a VERY  wise decision to be well clear of the harbour position, if this happened. Australian Infantry "had" to be in range of artillery at all times. There was NO excuse accepted.
