diabetes and VA disability claim

This is my first time on the forum and I have a question regarding VA disability claims. I am prior service (U.S. Army) and about 9 months after my discharge I found out I was a diabetic. The only reason I know is because I was at a doctors appointment for another reason and they discovered sugar in my urine. My doctor said I have probably been a diabetic for awhile. I was never checked during my 5 years of military service to see if I was diabetic and the military doctors never tested for it even when I was out processing. Can a person file a VA claim for diabetes? Or should I leave this situation along since I never had it documented in my medical records? I take medication for diabetes and fortunately I have had any life threatening consequences from diabetes. However, diabetes run in my family and my grandmother even died from it. I would appreciate any help anybody can offer and if they have any experience with diabetes and VA disability please share.

After about 11 months my VA disability finally went through. I was denied on some claims, one which supprised me. But because there was no history of any illness leading up to it in my records they didnt honor that part of my claim. I may try to appeal.
I think you should get more info from your doctor. Maybe even show him/her your military health records. Just because you were not diagnosed with Diabetes in the Military, doesnt mean that you didn't have or were treated for symptoms related to it. They may be able to find it that way. For example, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease 2 years after I got out in 2007. But I had some stomach issues while I was in, and through pictures taken of my intestinal walls they were able to see Crohn's in my military record dating back to 2002.
You may also want to find a near-by DAV representative and talk to them about your condition. Show them your records too, they may be able to find something else you qualify for - they work hard for you for free.
