Some soldiers demonstrate this on an almost daily basis; What drives them on ? I recall fella's like Mossy, who would NEVER back down, Mossy was a 20 yr old draftee[ He gave his life for his country ; shot in the face; he staggered on ; despite being ordered to take cover; he attacked; I pondered at the time that when GOD  handed out courage , Mossy was in the line. He looked like a teenage kid ; but he fought like a veteran . The day he was slain I cried my eyes out. He came in to the unit with the badge of courage pinned in place and never did it slip. GOD Bless you Mossy; your face lingers in my mind your deeds place you at the front of hardened soldiers much older than you. He was well liked among the "boys" MY country lost one of its best , that terrible day. He could have tried to avoid conscription; he chose to fight.I suppose he could have said "I'm a pacifist", he didn't. There were many like him; just boys; maligned by the press ; they did their duty; never tempted to avoid it.Conscription was a very hotly contested thing in Australia; various groups sprang up. "Save our sons"; They prompted young men to disobey the law and NOT register for national service; We in the Regular army despised them In Borneo; the 1st NATIONAL SERVICE MAN I MET; was older than me,; It was on the chopper pad at Bau; he stumbled off a chopper; looked confused; approached me, and asked "Am I in the right place" My response was "no; you have to be 7oo yards from here at the Brigade HQ.; ANYHOW; WE bundled him and his gear into a vehicle , which took him to the HQ.

Just a country boy from Bathurst N.S.W. Bathurst was the first major town established after the mountain range [ known as the great dividing range was crossed]; It is now a CITY.
