Called CONSCSRIPTION in Australia; commenced in the 1960's and ended in 1972. Every young man turning 20 at a certain time was required by Law to register for"possible" National Service. each boy had a number and all numbers were placed in a barrell and what ever predecided numbers were drawn. The entire thing created gigantic uproar and protest. Thousands thronged in every state capital city to protest. THEN, THE FIRST conscript[ known as nasho's was killed in Nam, his name was Erol NOACK and the crowds went ballistic. A change of Government took place in 1972 and it was all abolished. Roughly speaking each Infantry platoon had about 50% Nasho's and THERE WERE SOME CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS ETC, BUT I never heard of 1 that had to be dragged; kicking and screaming onto a ship or plane. I was damn proud of all I had. I get tears in my eyes when I recall the ones who never came home. They were magnificent. They carried out orders efficiently and with NO arguement. My very best friend was a Nasho; I thought so much of him that I went on R&R to HONG KONG AND purchased a Rolex watch to give him.He was THE BEST M-60 Gunner I ever saw or heard about] He would pull the Gun into his shoulder and charge an enemy position]- STUNNING to watch in action.
