The gunner in each rifle section was usually hand picked for the job. First; he had to be able to carry the extra weight of the M-60, plus at least also 400 rounds of linked belt ammo; must know the weapon backwards; be capable to act without orders ; ie, autoadopt the high ground; when patrolling. T.M. was my number 1 gunner and did a splendid job. I thought a lot of him as a soldier and the role suited him perfectly.As long as I could hear his weapon in a battle, I knew we were pretty ok. we became close friends and still keep in touch; 43 years later.i got him a Rolex watch as a gift to try and thank him for all he had done.

T.M. was a hero. his fire assisted DICK NORDEN to win the D.C.M. 2nd only to the VC.
