This occurs when an incompetent Officer calls a fire mission and the shells" drop short", hit tree tops and burst in amongst " the friendlies". Once, we were fighting our way through a huge bamboo patch; trying to get at a bunker system ; The Enemy were shredding the bamboo and us and the Platoon Commander called a Fire mission; his co ordinates were wrong and the shells started to burst in the trees , behind us. I grabbed my radio and called "22 this is 22 alpha; raise your fire, you are hitting us". It kept going; so I turned; told the corporal that he was in command and headed up this small ridge towards platoon hq. I got there in one piece and there was the platoon commander; his radio operator, laying behind the absolute largest tree in the entire area. I repeated" raise your fire; you are hitting us" The commander made NO move to use the radio; so I yelled. "SIR, I SWEAR IF YOU DO NOT LIFT YOUR FIRE; I will shoot you. I pointed my M-16 at him and repeated what I had said. The radio operator took action; called 2, this is 22 up 150 "fire fire fire". I found many such ?leaders?; who COULD NOT navigate; continually called incorrect missions and killed our own men. Upon return to our CO HQ; I reported the incident; but I knew it would not be the only time I swear to GOD; I would have shot the Officer; if the fire mission was not altered. This fellow could NOT navigate; some private soldiers could have done it better.

Just a country boy from Bathurst N.S.W. Bathurst was the first major town established after the mountain range [ known as the great dividing range was crossed]; It is now a CITY.
