For about 2 years; I specialised in long distance mountain treks. It was risky; but as long as proper planning was done; authorities alerted; good equipment; there was minimal worry. My longest was for 114 klms through the Blue  Mountains. I started at the explorers tree; [ so named after the first 3 men to cross these mountains ]. The first stage is down to a river called Cox  river; [ the mountains] and then on to "little cedar gap"[ this "gap" is  a ridiculously steep cliff[a trap for the unprepared] and on to Mt Cookum and the fearsome KOWMUNG river[sometimes called the last of the wild rivers]. This thing can and has killed people. Once on top of Cookum, there is a pile of stones and a sign , inviting all who got there, to place a rock on the pile. I was determined to do it all overland; no trails or tracks; just using a map, compass etc. It damn near killed me and took over 2 weeks ; but the scenery and the awesome feeling of it was worth it.I  came out at a place called Wollondilly; one more bloody river, then up a steep ridge to a road; where I hitched out of the area.

Just a country boy from Bathurst N.S.W. Bathurst was the first major town established after the mountain range [ known as the great dividing range was crossed]; It is now a CITY.

I tried a few more in Southern and Northern N.S.W.. then. I had a go at ThE GLASSHOUSE MOUNTAINS in Northern QUEENSLAND; It was VERY hard, all steep and rocky and it was also the Monsoon season. So MUCH Water I damn near drowned. When I got out I checked the rainfall. In 1 11 HOUR Period 13 " had come down. My favouite was the Otford to Bundeena ; there is a real great broken bay about half way and some old gun emplacements , on the cliffs. There are some really dangerous hand made ladders there; but I  preferred to abseil; it just felt safer.
