ex 1RAR [Vietnam] EX4RAR[Borneo]

« on: July 24, 2011, 11:49:42 PM »

[ the DRAFT], this was introduced in the 1960's in Australia. It was based on a lottery where birthdays were drawn and ALL those who were unfortunate enough to be born on that day went into the Military. OF COURSE; the vast majority ended up in Infantry to feed the grist mill of Vietnam. I was a regular army soldier; having joined on my 18th birthday. I volunteered for Borneo and also Vietnam. In recruit training; I was offered signals Corps; but I still insisted on INFANTRY. WHY? It was the toughest Corps. I went from recruits to INGLEBURN [ INFANTRY CENTRE ] for 6 months to learn weapons and tactics. Then I was posted to 1 RAR, probably the best fighting battalion in the Australian army. I  stayed there for 2 years and then volunteered to help form 4 RAR; which was to go and fight in Borneo, agaqinst the Indonesians who were invading Malaysia. Back from there and became a weqapons and tactics instructor; before re joining 1RAR to head for Vietnam. I only did 1 tour, 1 tour was enough; anyone who volunteered for a 2nd was a fool Ireturned to Australia in 1969; for discharge as I had completed 6 years. Most of us still keep in touch with each other even though it is now 42 years away I still think my experience taught me a lot.

Just a country boy from Bathurst N.S.W. Bathurst was the first major town established after the mountain range [ known as the great dividing range was crossed]; It is now a CITY.
